Any tips for playing slots - as have never played them ever!

Does anyone have any tips or is it just trial and error?

there is no skill involved like the table games. You will get a thousand responses on what people do, little routines, changing machines etc. but the fact of the matter is you insert coins/tickets and push a button. If you dont bet the max bet, you cant win the max payout. Nothing worse than hitting without the max bet in the machine.

You just need to find one that you like to play.

I usually only play 3 reel machines, and max bet. What that means with, say, a dollar machine is I%26#39;m betting $3 everytime. But that way if you hit a big jackpot you get the big payout. If you don%26#39;t bet ';max bet'; you don%26#39;t win the big one....

Now if you play the newer machines this is what you need to look out for. Sometimes ';Max bet'; could be 45 times the amount of the minimum bet. Say it%26#39;s a nickel machine, this 45 time max bet would be $2.25 per bet. That%26#39;s really all you need to be careful of.

Otherwise only gamble what you can afford to lose. Slots are the worst odds in Vegas, so any win is fun!

Also if you win a good amount, get up and walk away. They are betting you%26#39;ll get hooked and put your winnings right back in the machine hoping for more....

Have a great time.

';Trial and Error';....

Implies that one will get more efficient (';better';) with experience. Slots are totally random and you have the same chance of winning whether you are a newbie or 50-year veteran.

While there are betting stratagies, money management systems, and debates over ';hot'; versus ';cold'; machines, the end result is still pure luck.

The best pointers i have ever heard are:

Play slowwwwww...it will make your money and machine time last longer and allow you to get more comped drinks (remember to tip your waitress).

Play maximum coins....generally you have to in order to win the bigger jackpots.

Pick a machine with a theme, music or reel/screen action that appeals to you.

There are a million slots in Vegas, so don%26#39;t get glued to one. Make sure to cash-out, get up, walk around and see the sights. Don%26#39;t get mexmerized by one machine (and they are designed to do just that).

But the best advice is learn to play video poker, you can learn and try for free at wizardofodds.com. it is intellectually more stimulating (while still quite simple), and has a better return percentage. A good VP player can generate a 95%+ pay-back, while slots pay-out generally from the mid-80s to mid-90s percentage.

Alternatively, there is also video Blackjack.....easy and cheap to play and alsohaving better returns than the majority of slots.

good advice amberloo - thanks :)

Thanks for your great advice/tips. Fingers (and legs) crossed!

Amberloo, how do the comps compare on VP or BJ to the slots? I know not to chase comps but it seems my friends get so much more from the slot machines, comp wise, than I do on BJ.

Damama...

The number of comp points recieved per dollar put into the machine is much higher for slots than either VP or video BJ, typically several fold. For example at the Wynn you get 1 comp point per $3 wagered at slots versus 1 point for $9 on VP or VBJ.

Not sure how video Keno is treated.

Also not sure how the system at the Coast resorts compares slots and VP/BJ, as it gives points based on money ';out'; not ';in';.

Thanks. I guess they figure if they are giving the slot players poorer odds, they should get something for their trouble. I still prefer to think I am exercising my brain cells a little more at BJ or VP. I only play the slots when the cocktail service has been too goof for me to concentrate on anything else.

even though the nickel or penny slots are appealing be aware that their payoff schedules are less than the higher denomination machines. ex. on a nickel video poker machine the payout would be .05 [0ne unit]for two pair but on a .25 machine you would get .50, a 2 unit payoff. Also the percentage of payouts increase as does the denomination. ex. .25 machine may payout approx. 90% whereas a dollar machine might payout 98%.These are only approximations.Don%26#39;t expect that if you invest $100 on a dollar machine you will be guaranteed a return of $98.

enjoy and as they say ';bet with your head not over it';.

Here%26#39;s a metaphor:

You give a person $100, and there is a 60/40 chance that they will either punch you in the gut, or give you a hug and a compliment. In random rare cases, they will have a knife in that clenched fist, or they also could throw in a back massage with the hug.

Agree with previous poster-find the one that has the most entertaining theme to you, because in the end they are random number generators that are told to ';pay out'; at random times, so there%26#39;s no influence you can have on them (legally at least).
